AC Milan vs Spezia

Monday 17 January, 18:30

AC Milan are gearing up to take relegation-threatened Spezia on Monday evening, looking to extend their 100% record in 2022.

Victory would send the Rossoneri a point above defending champion Inter, albeit having played a match more than their bitter rival.

The Rossoneri have impressed despite having so many absences. Stefano Pioli’s men followed up the 3-1 win against Roma with another convincing performance against Venezia, winning 3-0. And on Thursday evening, they bagged a 3-1 win against Genoa in the Italian Cup on Thursday, albeit after extra-time.

They have played 10 matches at Home with 7 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses, scoring 1.9 goals per game.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back from suspension, while Sandro Tonali is serving a one-game suspension. Star centre-back Fikayo Tomori is out injured. Milan’s healthy centre-back options are the inexperienced Pierre Kalulu and Matteo Gabbia.

Spezia is only three points above the drop zone. Spezia were not in Coppa Italia action in midweek so their last outing was a 1-0 Serie A victory over fellow struggles Genoa.

That win was only the second for Thiago Motta’s men in their last 10 matches across all competitions, but Spezia are arguably in their best form of the season, avoiding defeat in three of their last four matches (2-1-1), whilst winning two important clashes at high-flying Napoli and fellow relegation-threatened Genoa (both 1-0).

Spezia have lost 7 of their past 10 away matches, and they have conceded 2 or more goals in 7 of their last 10 away matches.

Despite their two consecutive away clean sheets, Spezia remain the highest conceding team away from home so far in the Serie A (2.45 goals conceded on average per game).

Bologna vs Napoli

Monday 17 January, 18:30

Napoli’s Champions League spot is suddenly under threat, while Bologna have fallen out of the top half of the Serie A table and are struggling for results.

Bologna will be worried by a recent drop of form which has seen the club lose four of their last five Serie A games (1-0-4), and now are well off the pace in the race for European qualification.

Bologna went down 2-1 in their most recent clash, against struggling Cagliari; it was their first league loss this season after scoring first (7-2-1 when scoring first).

Bologna FC haven’t scored in 2 of their 10 home matches in Serie A this season, scoring an average of 1.68 goals.

Third-place Napoli will be looking to keep up the pressure on the top two when it visits Bologna.

Napoli is 7 points below Inter, and hold the league-leading record of 11 clean sheets in Serie A

Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret is in line to deputise for David Ospina, who got injured during the Coppa Italia tie with Fiorentina.

Fiorentina vs Genoa

Monday 17 January, 19:45

Fresh off an inspiring and utterly bonkers 2-5 win over Napoli in the Coppa Italia, Fiorentina return to the Stadio Artemio Franchi to take on Genoa.

Coming from a heavy 4-0 away defeat to Torino, Fiorentina managed to return to winning ways in the Coppa Italia on Thursday, though, recording a 5-2 victory over Napoli after extra-time, with Fiorentina netting three times in the additional 30 minutes!

Fiorentina lost 4-0 on the road last weekend against the in-form Torino. This was Fiorentina’s first defeat in a long time.

Going on, they had won five of their past 8 games, and they had remained unbeaten in 7 of these matches.

Genoa are in deep relegation trouble and have failed to win any of their last 18 league matches. They’ve failed to win 20 straight league games and have only won once all year.

Genoa are second-last with 12 points, just 1 ahead of imploding Salernitana, and are sitting 6 points behind 17th-placed Venezia and they just sacked Andriy Shevchenko, who was their second manager of the year. The 3-1 loss to Milan in the Coppa Italia Round of 16 was Andriy Shevchenko’s last game in charge of Genoa.

Shevchenko had overseen nine league defeats -6 defeats in Serie A-, with his only victory in 11 games a 1-0 win over Salernitana in the Italian Cup.

Under-17 coach Abdoulay Konko will take charge as the interim coach until a permanent appointment is made, but has a host of absences to cope with.
