Everton vs Aston Villa

Saturday 22 January, 12:30

It’s Duncan Ferguson vs Steven Gerrard as the Scot tries to get a reaction out of Everton in his first match back as caretaker manager.

Everton have their first match since sacking Rafa Benitez when they host Aston Villa on Saturday.

A 2-1 defeat at Norwich saw Benitez sacked; Everton took just 5 points in their last 12 Premier League matches (1-2-9).

Benitez’s sacking was expected; in a Premier League table since October 2, Everton would be bottom, and with a record of one win from their last 13 Premier League games.

Everton have been ahead at half-time just twice in 19 games, the lowest in the Premier League. This season, the Toffees have kept just 3 clean sheets; only Newcastle and Watford have kept fewer clean sheets than Everton.

Since Steven Gerrard took charge of Villa in November, they have started to climb towards the safety of mid-table. Last weekend they came back from being 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home with Manchester United.

Aston Villa won four of their first six matches under the former England captain – the defeats were against Manchester City and Liverpool – and since then it’s no wins in four matches.
One of those was a 3-1 home loss to Chelsea but in their last two matches, away and at home against Manchester United, they have been really decent.

Aston Villa have conceded seven goals in their last three Premier League games (0-1-2), more than they had in their previous 7 matches in the Premier League (6).

Manchester United vs West Ham

Saturday 22 January, 15:00

In midweek, Manchester United defeated Brentford 3-1 to end their two-game winless streak in the top flight.

Rangnick’s side lie seventh in the Premier League table. United have lost just once in the league under his leadership, but there are still some concerns about the side’s shaky defense, which could be exposed by West Ham on Saturday.

In the last 15 Premier League home games, Manchester United have kept just one clean sheet.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been suffering from a neck injury.

At the weekend, David Moyes’s Hammers were beaten 3-2 by Leeds United on their own turf, ending their four-game winning streak in all competitions.

As a reminder, West Ham currently sit just 2 points above Man United, having played one game more, and Moyes’s side beat United at Old Trafford in the EFL Cup earlier this season.

Moyes has never won a Premier League away match at Old Trafford in 14 attempts (D4 L10).

David Moyes’s side have won their last two away games at Watford and Crystal Palace, scoring seven goals, but it is notable that the Eagles are the highest-ranked team among the six David Moyes’s side have beaten away from home.

Southampton vs Manchester City

Saturday 22 January, 17:30

Southampton lost their first match in four matches last weekend to Wolves. The Saints had been in good form, having taken points off of West Ham, Spurs and Brentford.

Southampton have been scoring freely in recent weeks, tallying 14 goals in their last six matches, and Nathan Redmond and Armando Broja are a joy to watch up front.

Havenhuttl’s side is unbeaten in seven straight home matches! In addition, Southampton have netted in each of their last seven home matches, and have netted 11 times in their last five games.

With a winning streak of 12 games in the Premier League, Manchester City will aim to extend their lead over Liverpool to 14 points.

Although a Covid outbreak might have complicated matters, City’s performances have not been affected and there was a sense of calm assurance following their 1-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend.

The City’s away record of nine wins, one draw, and one defeat is the best in the division. The champions have scored more than once in seven of their last eight away matches in the Premier League!
