Elche vs Real Madrid
Thursday 20 January
A few days after winning the Supercopa de Espana in Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid will face Elche in a one-legged match in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero on Thursday evening.
Real Madrid won the Spanish Super Cup at the weekend and can maintain their Copa del Rey progress at the expense of Elche, who are currently sitting 27 points below them in La Liga.
Eder Militao will not be at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal due to suspension after receiving a straight red card in the Supercopa Final against Athletic Club, while Thibaut Courtois and Karim Benzema have not been included in today’s squad due to a knock and rest respectively.
Elche’s fortunes have improved significantly since Francisco took over as their manager. Francisco have won six, drawn two, and lost two of their first ten games following the departure of Fran Escriba. Both defeats were by a single goal, conceding late goals in both games against Barcelona and Valencia
Elche have enjoyed a strong run of form lately, winning each of their last three competitive matches; they won Villareal at home on Sunday 1-0, Espanyol away 2-1 and previously Almeria 2-1 away
Elche beat SD Leioa, Unionistas CF and UD Almeria on their route to Round of 16. Elche haven’t progressed past the Round of 16 since the 1968/69 campaign when they had reached the final.
As for Elche, coach Francisco is expected to miss the game due to COVID-19, centre-backs Pedro Bigas and Enzo Roco are both out injured and there is a good number of players out since last week due to COVID-19.
